Vignette, toll fee & GO-box: Driving on Austria's Motorways
Introduction
On Austria’s motorways and expressways, vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross weight generally require a vignette. It must be valid before you join the motorway, and you can choose between an adhesive vignette and a digital one.
Rates depend on the type of vehicle (car or vehicle up to 3.5 t, or motorbike) and the period of validity: 1 day, 10 days, 2 months or 1 year.
You can buy the vignette online in the ASFINAG toll shop or at around 4,500 sales outlets – among them the motoring clubs ÖAMTC and ARBÖ, petrol stations and Trafiken (Austrian tobacconists and newsagents), and, outside Austria, at motoring clubs and petrol stations close to the border.
On certain sections, such as the Brenner and the Arlberg, separate route tolls apply in addition.
Lorries over 3.5 t need the electronic GO-Box and the Umweltpickerl emissions sticker.
From 2027, the vignette goes fully digital!
From 1 December 2026, vignettes for Austria's motorways and expressways will only be available in digital form. The traditional adhesive vignette will no longer be sold for 2027. The adhesive vignette for 2026 is valid until 31st January 2027.
Buy a digital vignette online
You can buy Austria’s digital vignette before you travel, in the ASFINAG toll shop or through the free ASFINAG app. It is linked to your registration number, so there is nothing to stick on the windscreen.
There are four versions of the digital vignette: 1 day, 10 days, 2 months and 1 year.
Important: When does your vignette become valid?
Bought at a machine or sales outlet – valid immediately, whichever version you choose.
1-day or 10-day vignette bought online – valid immediately.
2-month or annual vignette bought online – valid on the 18th day after purchase, because of the statutory right of withdrawal.
Checks on the road are automatic, using your registration number.
Tip: use ASFINAG’s toll planner. Enter your start and destination, check the route and choose the right toll product. The planner shows at a glance which products you need for your journey, including any separate route tolls.
The toll sticker for cars and motorbikes
There are three versions of the toll sticker in Austria: annual, 2-month and 10-day.
On a car, the sticker goes on the inside of the windscreen, either in the top left-hand corner or beside the rear-view mirror. It must be clearly visible from outside and must not be covered by a tinted strip.
On a motorbike, apply it to a clearly visible, fixed part that cannot be swapped – the tank or a fork leg, for example.
Checks are carried out by the police, customs and ASFINAG’s service and control staff, and cameras also record vignettes automatically.
Important: the sticker may only be applied once. If you remove it and stick it on again, it is no longer valid.

Exceptions to the Vignette requirement
The A 1 Westautobahn toll section between the state border at Walserberg and the Salzburg Nord junction.
The A 12 Inntal motorway toll section between the state border at Kufstein and the Kufstein-Süd junction.
The A 14 Rheintal/Walgau motorway toll section between the state border at Hörbranz and the Hohenems junction.
The A 26 Linz motorway toll section (currently still under construction, will become subject to the vignette requirement only at the end of the day on which its connection to the A 7 Mühlkreis motorway via the Linz-Hummelhof interchange is opened to traffic).
Further information on temporary exemptions can be found on the website of the responsible authority, ASFINAG.
Section toll / toll roads
Independently of the vignette, a road charge (toll) is levied for cost-intensive Alpine passes in terms of construction and operation. For these toll sections, such as the Arlberg or the Karawanken Tunnel, tolls can be paid directly at the respective toll station or online in advance. Depending on the route, costs range between €7 and €15 per journey. The special toll sections are:
the Bosruck and Gleinalm tunnels on the A9
the A10 Tauern Motorway
the A11 Karawanken Motorway
the A13 Brenner Motorway, and
the S16 Arlberg Expressway.
The "GO-Box" for vehicles exceeding 3.5 t
Drivers of vehicles with a permissible maximum weight exceeding 3.5 t (e.g. heavy goods vehicles, buses, heavy mobile homes) must pay a mileage-based toll for the use of motorways and expressways.
To be able to pay this toll, you need to get a so-called GO-Box before you drive onto a motorway or expressway. The toll can only be paid if you have a GO-Box, which is available from many petrol stations and other GO-Box partners in Austria. You can find a full list of outlets here.
The rates depend, among other things, on the number of axles, the number of kilometres driven, and the vehicle's EURO emission class.
Find rates and more information here.
Tip: Environmental sticker for Austria
In Austria, the environmental sticker requirement only applies to lorries in categories N1, N2 and N3 if they wish to enter one of the 6 environmental zones currently in force, as well as cars that have been registered as HGV N1 for tax purposes.
